Get To Know "Jen The Pen"
My girl Jen The Pen was harder to get an interview than trying to get Michael Jackson. I kid! I kid! Nevertheless, she made it, we kicked it off and it was a great interview with lots of juicy information. So sit back, relax and get to know Jen The Pen.
NYC: Who was Jen The Pen before the Dame Dash reality show called “Ultimate Hustler”?
JTP: There was no Jen The Pen before the reality show! (Laughs) I mean it was just Jen. Before the reality show I was interning. I mean Jen The Pen was probably always somewhere in me.
NYC: Ok.
JTP: But it was just Jen at the time. I was interning at Epic Records for this subsidiary label called Big Shot Records and I was just like I want to be a personal assistant. So…..uhmmm….the President of that company was Kay Slay’s right hand man at the time and he said to me “Yo! Just come and work for us”. I said ok, you know, I didn’t know anything about the music industry. I was fresh out of high school and they were like just come work with us. So that happened and then obviously you know the subsidiary label signed to Epic. It shut down and then I started interning for Wendy Williams. That was a big dream of mine!!
NYC: Really?!
JTP: I told everyone I’m going to intern for Wendy Williams you’ll see!!! You’ll see!!! I’m going to intern for her. I was listening to her everyday faithfully and uh…..
*We paused for a minute because it got hot in my truck and we had to put on the air conditioning.
JTP: So then I started interning for Wendy and I became one of her favorite interns. While I was interning for her is when the “Ultimate Hustler” happened.
NYC: Ok. Did you submit something to be a part of the “Ultimate Hustler”?
JTP: What happened was I heard Sunny talking about it on Hot 97. My Mom actually heard her talking about it. It was on a Thursday when I found out about it. Saturday was when they were doing the casting call. So I said to myself “fuck it”. I’m going down there! I’m going to be the only white girl on the line, they have to pick me! (Smiles) So I went down there and they put us in a little circle and they asked us all questions like “What’s your most embarrasing moment? What’s the difference between Jay and Dame?” Just all different kinds of questions to find out who you are as a person. So one of the girls said to me “What are you doing tomorrow? We want you to come for a filmed interview.” I was like Oh! Ok! And then from there it just escalated like that. I kept going back for filmed interviews, then they wanted you to film yourself at home, then the last stage, when I knew that they were going to pick me was when they did this call in and they asked me…..they had me film myself as they were on speakerphone asking me a bunch of questions. And then like a week later I got the call like you’ve been accepted!!! I just found out recently that they weren’t going to pick me.
NYC: Dang! That’s a long ass process!!!
JTP: Yeah! It was really long! I went to dinner recently with the Marketing Director of Dame Dash Enterprises and he explained to me what happened during that process. I was told that Dame, when watching the videos, skipped past me and the producer of the show had to tell him “What are you doing? You need that girl on the show! She’s going to give you the tears!”
NYC: The tears?
JTP: The tears!! (We both laugh) And that’s how I ended up getting on the show. I ended up being Dame’s favorite of course because he gave me a nickname. No one else got a nickname. (Smiles)
NYC: Now when you didn’t win on the show…..What did you do after the show?
JTP: Well, I felt like not winning….it was a gift by not winning. I wasn’t upset that I didn’t win. I didn’t go on that show to be like “Hey, I’m going to win this show”.
NYC: Right.
JTP: I went on the show because I was going to get exposure and I’m just gonna let everybody know I’m here and I want to be a personal assistant. That was my thing. So you know not being a winner actually did me better. I ended up getting more exposure than everyone else and I don’t know what happened to the winner. Don’t know where he is now? I mean I hear now and again a couple of things about him but not alot. Not what you would expect. So after the show I ended up going and working with a car broker company. They were selling cars to the stars. They were selling cars to people like Maino, Diplomats, Kevin Lyles and Lyor Cohen. And because I didn’t get a job right into the music industry I felt I was going to work my way in by being there.
NYC: Right.
JTP: From there everything else escalated.
NYC: I have to tell you that I love your blog.
JTP: You love my blog? Thank you! (Smiles)
NYC: I’m on it everyday trying to find out the white girl tip of the day.
JTP: Awwww! Thank you! (We laugh)
NYC: When did you first decide to start blogging?
JTP: When I first started Whoo Kid’s show, I just wanted to do radio. When I saw how important the internet is….that’s when I was like I need a fuckin blog! (Smiles) I needed people to go somewhere else other than my myspace page. Say you don’t have Satellite radio….
NYC: Which I do. I heard you on Saturday. (We both laugh)
JTP: And you still want to know who Jen The Pen is I think that having the blog is really a way into who I am in soo many different lights. I give you a little bit of my personal life, I give you the industry side of me and I give you my wacky white girl tips.
NYC: I love that! Now you are on the Whoo Kid show. How did you become a part of the Whoo Kid show?
JTP: My manager at the time was very close with the people that worked over at G-Unit radio and she told me that they were looking for a new gossip girl. She spoke to the producer and he knew who I was and told her to bring me up on the show on Saturday. It was supposed to be a trial run. They were going to have a different girl every week and then they were going to decide who they wanted. So I went and never left. I charmed Mr. Whoo Kid! (Laughs)
NYC: Being that you were an intern for Wendy Williams what do you think about the whole situation with Nicole Spence?
JTP: I don’t know what to think of it because Kevin (Wendy’s husband) never came at me like that. I never saw him come at any of the other interns like that either. However, I was really focused when I was over there! I wouldn’t even want to think that. I never wanted to feel that way about any of the men that were around us, the producers or anything. I was strictly there to learn from Wendy! I didn’t want to know anything about any dude that was there. You only get a once a week shot at her show because she has sooo many interns. So you’re only there once a week! So if when you’re there you want to take in as much as you can. Who has time to listen to that other bullshit? So I don’t know what to say. I would really hope that wasn’t true.
NYC: Being that you’re in the industry, has anyone tried to push up on you trying to say you can advance in your career?
JTP: No! Honestly, I have to be soo thankful for that. Anyone that’s ever tried to come at me has just been coming at me because they wanted to fuck or they want to go out on a date. One of the two but no one has ever used their power to say “Ok well if you come over here and fuck with me I’m going to put you in a better position”. No one has ever done that! Every position that I’ve gotten is because people genuinely like me and wanted me on their team. Relationships are key and I always try to maintain a professional relationship with everyone.
NYC: Do you have beef with any other gossip type individuals?
JTP: No! I mean not that I know of. I have respect for all the other gossip types. I mean sometimes you can get envious at times and I can be honest and say that. Sometimes you see somebody who’s in the same position as you and they get ahead a little quicker and you feel like DAMN!! Why didn’t I get that? What happened to me? But everybody gets their turn. I really truly believe that.
NYC: Does anybody try to ever compare you to Wendy Williams or Miss Jones?
JTP: No never! I mean sometimes joking around they might but on the show Whoo Kid is always ready to turn my mic off. (Laughs) I mean Wendy Williams and Dame Dash are my entertainment parents. They don’t keep their lips locked for shit so nobody should expect me to.
NYC: Do people ever get mad about the comments that you say?
JTP: I mean if they get mad, they get mad. I never had an entertainer call and feel a type of way about anything that I said. I’ve had listeners call up and make comments but for the most part I think for everybody else……..I say things that somebody else might be thinking in their head. They just don’t want to say it out loud. I say alot of things out loud that Whoo Kid is definitely thinking but he won’t say it out loud. Whoo Kid I think feels like his relationships with people can be hurt if he said something crazy rather than me. I’m more like fuck it.
NYC: Ok. Those questions were just to let people know how Jen The Pen came to be but on a more personal note, if you had your chance to smash anyone in the industry who would it be?
JTP: No, No, No, one thing you learn quick in this industry is not to kiss and tell. You see some of these bitches getting caught out there. But I do have someone that is very special! (Smiles)
NYC: So you got him already?
JTP: I got him!
NYC: In the industry?
JTP: He was on my vision board and I have him! I spoke him into existence and I’m extremely lucky and happy.
NYC: Can I take an educated guess?
*We start busting out laughing!*
JTP: My private life is private but I am proud to be in love.
NYC: Ok. Alright. You got him already. (Laughing) Alright that was good cuz that was going to be my next question. So that answers if you have anyone special in your life.
JTP: Yeah! (Laughs)
NYC: Do you have any kids?
JTP: No! No babies yet. I think maybe within the next couple of years I definitely want to get my own radio show before I have a baby. I definitely want to succeed in that aspect and then I think I’ll be ready. I don’t want to be an old Mom either. I think by 30 if there are no babies yet it’s gonna have to be time. If I have to go to the sperm bank and get someone else’s sperm and shove it up in me cuz I don’t want to be an old Mom.
NYC: How old are you?
JTP: I’m going to be 25 on July 16th.
NYC: What does Jen The Pen like to do on her down time?
JTP: I love to go tanning! Whether it’s laying on the beach or going to the tanning salon. That’s my vice.
NYC: What are you listening to in your car?
JTP: I listen to Hip Hop and R&B. I have Lil Wayne and Leona Lewis in my car though. Gotta switch it up from time to time. (Smiles)
NYC: What’s next for Jen The Pen?
JTP: I do the personal assisting stuff. Entertainment wise being in front of the camera. I mean Chelsea Handler is another one of my idols. I feel like sometimes that should have been my show! (Laughs) That’s me! I would love! I don’t want to do exactly what Chelsea does but again that’s like my lane. I definitely want to be in front of the camera at some point. Chelsea does this thing called “The Roundtable” discussion which I pray to God everything goes right and we’re going to start working on getting me on her round table discussion. So I can start making TV appearances.
NYC: So you are leaning more towards a talk show not like a sitcom or anything?
JTP: Yes definitely more talk show.
NYC: If people wanted to reach out to you how would they do so?
JTP: They can always hit me up at my blog or email me at jenthepenadvice@gmail.com. My myspace page is www.myspace.com/jenthepen.
NYC: Well girl I appreciate you coming out and letting me interview you.
JTP: No problem!
